Someone really smart once told me, "each morning when I open my eyes, I say to myself: I, not, events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. So I have not updated my blog in a month, and well that pretty much explains my life, a whirlwind. With school, work, homework, social engagements, football and just life, sitting down to write is just not currently feasable. However, for a short glimpse into my life here are some photos!

Back to Cola, Back to a Routine

So the past week and a half has been a whirlwind for me. I went from California, to Jersey, to Virginia, to North Carolina, and finally arrived back to Columbia South Carolina. My last week in California was amazing. It included the last orientation session, a flashlight ceremony, banquet, a goodbye party and then of course Denica and I leaving. Let me say that I cried the five days prior to leaving California, and every day so far being back. It is not that I am not glad to be back, it's just I was not ready to leave. I miss my bosses (Kelly, Alissa and Sara), the other intern (Denica), all of my students, and California itself. My summer internship experience really made an impact on me professionally and personally, and it has a special place in my heart, and I do plan on returning at some point.

Johanna picked me up in the fabulous Newark, New Jersey and I got up bright and early to head to my family reunion in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Why on earth Harrisonburg, Virginia you might ask? Well simply because half of my family lives in Charlotte, NC and half in New Jersey, so Harrisonburg Virginia is halfway in between. I spent three days with all of my mom's side of my family and did everything from just hanging out to kickball and wiffle ball games. Push come to shove it was great to see my family, but it was also a tease just seeing them for three days and then having to say goodbye again. There were more tears, but I mean I think that's just me. Below are the pictures that we have taken every year since Jess and I were around 5, we used to just to age order, but as younger ones grew taller a height picture was added just so they could rub it in.

The Girls

After spending the night in Charlotte, my cousin Nick and drove me back to Cola. The humidity aside I am excited to be back (today it was 108 degrees with humidity). I have been staying with my friend Sam for the past two nights while my apartment gets ready, and who does not love a sleepover? I am excited for what this year of grad school has to bring, am quickly filling up my agenda and my time with stuff, and have reached the realization that could be my last year of school for a while, if not ever. So, in keeping with my California motto: why not? I am planning on living the year to the fullest! (But, my heart is still in California, oh and the time difference is really messing with my sleep.)

Do I Really Have to Leave Here?

So with less then a week left in California, the packing has begun, as have the goodbyes. Let me say for the record, that while I am excited to see my family in Virginia, and everyone back at school in Cola, but I am by no means excited or ready to leave here. Somewhere along the line I fell in love with California, my job, and all the amazing people I have met out here, and I just am not ready to leave it behind. With that being said, here are just a few things I am going to miss about California, and a few things I am excited to have again on the East Coast:

1. The lack of humidity out here, it really just does wonders for your hair

2. The fact that it has not rained one day all summer

3. San Jose State University

4. My students, co-workers, and new friends

8. Living in a city

9. The relaxed pace of life and go with the flow attitude of everyone

10. Palm Trees, they are everywhere

6. No three hour time difference, it makes communication hard

I'm excited for the week ahead, prepared for some rough goodbyes, and trying to remember that I am leaving a place I love, to go back to a place I love. WIth that said, here are some pictures from the past weeks adventures.

Hurry Up and Relax

This weekend my day-by- day calendar said "Hurry Up and Relax" and that is exactly what I did.

Friday, one of my orientation leaders BK taught me how to long board. Everyone on San Jose's campus either rides a bike or longboards, so to take some of the culture away, I wanted to learn. Luckily, BK is a good teacher and I only suffered one major fall. Long boarding is fun, and I could see how it could make for a good form of transportation, but it will definately take some more practice. Right now I'm working on learning how to stop, versus just jumping off, and I'm hoping Pete will help me some more once I'm back in SC. Then, Tom, a friend from home who is also driving cross country came for the night and we explored down town and caught up!

Saturday I moved from my bed to the pool at 8:00am to soak up some sun. Then in the afternoon I went to tour Winchester Mystery House (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Mystery_House) with Denica, her boyfriend Shane, and one of our orientation leaders Kaitlynn. The house is a huge Victorian Mansion, that is supposed to be haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester's riffles. The tour was interesting, and the house and gardens were beautiful. We topped of the afternoon by taking Shane to In-and-Out, a common tradition around here.

Today, I went to the Tech Museum in downtown San Jose. For those of you who don't know San Jose is located in the Silicon Valley, which hosts companies such as Google, Facebook, Adobe, etc. and became really prominent in the technology boom. The museum has a whole array of exibits, with my favorite being the earthquake simulator. I experienced the 1994 Northridge California earthquake, and I'm starting to think that is all the earthquake I need.

Tomorrow brings us to Session 6, which is our second to last. Denica and I leave here in less then two weeks, and while I am excited to see my family in Virginia and everyone back in South Carolina, I am by no means ready to leave here. So, how are we dealing with it, we are just avoiding the topic until further notice, perfect method, right?

"Getting Dragged by a Cab - Priceless"

So what happens when you have an internship in California for the summer, people want to visit you! This past week my mom and sister came out to visit to see A) California, and B) me, or vice versa - depends who you ask. They arrived Wednesday night and we started with a true California tradition, dinner at In-and-Out. Thursday they explored San Jose's campus while I worked, met my co-workers and bosses and then we headed out to drive down the coast (still my favorite party of California). We drove from San Jose down to Bixby Bridge / Big Sur, and even though there was lots of fog the views were still gorgeous. Props to my mom, who is terrified of heights, but drove the curvy roads anyways, with minimal panic attacks so Shan and I could stop for pictures and sight seeing. Then when we returned home Shan and I went to Orientation Prom so she could meet all of my fabulous students!

Friday we got up bright and early to head to Santa Cruz for our surfing lesson! I am considering giving up Higher Education to become a Professional Surfer, but I haven't officially decided yet. Actually, surfing was a lot harder then I imagined, and took a lot of upper body strength (which I don't have). But it was tons of fun, and both Shan and I were able to actually stand up and surf a few waves. Best part, I got to wear a wet suit and really looking legit is half the battle. After our surfing experience we walked he Fisherman's Wharf to see the Sea Lions, and the boardwalk for a mid afternoon snack. To complete our fun packed day we stopped at Henry Cowell Redwood State Park to see the Redwoods, they were just as impressive the second time I saw them!

Saturday we went to San Francisco to continue our how much of California can you fit into four days. We started with Golden Gate Bridge, and then drove around Sausalito, which is where I want to live someday - the houses, views, area, everything is just beautiful. Again, my mother managed to show us the whole area with very minimal panic attacks! Then we checked into our hotel, and took the bus down to Pier 39. We first explored Pier 39, all of the shops, the sea lions and the farmer's market! We set out on a trolley tour, seeing everything from the Full House house, to Pacifica Heights, Little Italy, China Town and everything in between. The only downside was the fact that the trolley was open, and it was freezing. Upon our return we went to Little Italy where we had a delicious meal. Exhausted, we decided to take a cab back to our hotel. Shan got in the cab, I got in the cab, my mom got halfway in the cab and it started to pull off! Now if you know my mother, and know our luck, this is merely the story of her life. The cab drove a good five feet with her hanging out of it before he realized, said I'm sorry and continued on like nothing happened.

Sunday we went to Union Square, and the three story Forever 21. Then we headed down to Pier 33 to go on our Alcatraz Tour. The tour was great, informative, interesting and fun! We ended our San Francisco adventure with some clam chowder from Fisherman's Wharf and a Cable Car Ride. Shan and I stood on the cable car, like they did in Full House, and it was by far one of the best ways to see San Francisco!

Monday morning my sister and mom headed home, as me and the rest of orientation staff started session 5! I realize I am really lucky to have family who want to, and can visit me where ever I may be in the country! Oh, and orientation session 5 went wonderfully, but I wouldn't expect anything less from my wonderful co-workers and students!
